Sri. V K C Mammed Koya started a rubber-based unit to manufacture MC sheet for Hawaii slippers in the year 1984 with 20 employees. Later on, Hawaii straps were also inducted to the production line and in 1986 launched the first product with own brand name in market viz.
VKC Hawaii with an initial production of 600 pairs per day. His vision was to give quality products to the consumerat affordable price. Within a short period, the product got a very good acceptance in the market with its affordable price and good quality. The success of the Hawaii slipper manufacturing unit and the RPVC unit gave a signal to the business community and the vast potential was seen by the various industrialists. This resulted in a rapid change in the footwear Industry in the Region.
Within a few years the number of Rubber and RPVC units grew to more than 100 in the area. In 1994, the group ventured the first unit in Kerala to manufacture footwear from virgin PVC. This resulted in a big change and the multinational brands felt competition from the local brands. In 1998, he initiated to start the first Micro Cellular PVC footwear in Kerala with imported plant andmachinery. This was a big success and most of the manufactures from other states and multinational brands had to face severe competition in the market.
With the earlier slogan, “Quality at affordable Price” made the VKC products popular in the market day by day. It also expanded its market to other Southern States. In 1999, set up one unit for the manufacture of Hawaii slippers in Tamilnadu to cater the needs of the Tamilnadu market. In the year 2001, the group started the first Air Injected PVC DIP footwear-manufacturing unit in South India. This also was widely accepted. In 2003, he ventured the first injected EVA manufacturing unit in South-Central India. This was accepted very well by the market and the production was increased from 3000 pairs per day to 45000 pairs per day within 5 years.
In 2006, initiated the backward integration to produce EVA compound for Injection and started the first
EVA compounding plant in the South Central India. In 2007, the group initiated the manufacturing of PU DIP footwear at affordable prices for common man. Meanwhile, another unit was commissioned at Mysore, Karnataka mainly for the production of PU chappals with increased capacity and the products are well accepted by the Karnataka consumers. Later for catering the Gujarat market, one more unit has been commissioned at Vapi, Subsequently unitsin Vijayawada & West Bengal. In May 2017 set up a Unit at Kanpur. Currently the Group has units at Srilanka, Sudan and Dacca.
VKC products are also very well accepted in the foreign market especially in Middle East GCC countries, Singapore and Malaysia. The products are competing with the low priced Chinese brands in the Middle East market. The Group has thirty manufacturing units with a production capacity of six lakh footwear per day. At present, VKC is one of the leading footwear brands in the Indian market. Current brand portfolio promoted by and Debongo Shoes & U4iC. The group has thirty manufacturing plants spread across India and more than 500 designs for Gents, Ladies and Kids across Sandals, Floaters, Shoes, Flip-flops and Hawaii, knitted upper shoes and Sports shoes.VKC Pride and Debongo shoes are well accepted brands of the Group. The Group also has back packs and apparel products.
The turnover of the Group is about 2500 crores. The Group provides direct employment to around 7000 and another 4000 are employed with vendors. We have a well-equipped design studio with professional designers who are developing the concepts acceptable to the youth and ladies. The durability of our products is another attraction. The Group is managed by well qualified and experienced professionals. Recently VKC also entered in to manufacture of Health protection products like Sanitizers, facemask and hand wash to meet the attack of Corona pandemic an epidemic a threat to global population. The products are alsogetting good demand.
“VKC Charitable Foundation”, Kolathara, and Kozhikode is providing assistance in the education health and other social activities. During the 30th year of establishment the Group establishedthirty endowments awards in thirty educational institutions. Every year the outstanding passing out students are getting an award of Rs.10000. The trust is running two schools in an economically poor location and giving free uniform, books and breakfast and mid-day meals to students. Also undertake providing of medical equipment’s to Hospitals and Primary Health Centers and Handicapped persons at free of cost. The trust along with CIFI offered 50 residences to the poor affected by the last years flood in Kerala. The work is in progress 30 residences have already been allotted to the poor and needy.
